Azithromycin and its active ingredient, azithromycin Dihydrate (Dihydrate), are used to treat or prevent certain infections caused by susceptible bacteria. They may be used alone or in combination with other antibiotics to treat the same infection.
The recommended dose is one 250 mg azithromycin tablet taken with water. Your doctor may increase the dose to 200 mg once or twice daily. The dose may be taken with or without food. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
Your doctor or pharmacist may submit a form to measure the dose. The amount measured is the amount of azithromycin Dihydrate absorbed into your body as a result of the treatment. The amount absorbed will vary according to the stage of infection and the severity of the infection. You may use the Z-Pak (zithromax and azithromycin combination) to help you take the dose. The Z-Pak should be taken with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the Z-Pak, or Z-Pak can break apart.
Do not take the Z-Pak if you are allergic to sulfamethoxazole or trimethoprim (e.g., trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole; sulfamethoxazole-sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole-sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole).
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush, or break the Azithromycin tablets. The active ingredient, azithromycin, may be absorbed into the skin and other tissues of the body as a result of the treatment.
